RESTIO Chondropetalum tectorum

Commonly known as Thatching reed



Rush-like plant forming an ornate erect tussock. Prefers full sun and well drained soil. Grows well in coastal conditions and survives up to -8°C

  • Good to know - Elegia tectorum. Tolerates salt-laden winds. Good for coastal gardens.
  • Pests & Diseases - under glass, red spider mites, whiteflies.
  • Place of Origin - South Africa (Western Cape)
  • Height - 30-50cm (12-20in)
  • Spread - 1m (3ft)
  • Evergreen - mid- to dark-green stems.
  • Ornamental grasses - tufted perennial with short rhizomes. Produces dark, black-brown spikelets.
  • Half hardy - unheated greenhouse / mild winter - Hardy in coastal and relatively mild parts of the UK except in severe winters and a risk from sudden (early) frosts. May be hardy elsewhere with wall shelter or good micro-climate. Likely to be damaged or killed in cold winters. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -5°C (23°F)
  • Fertile moist well-drained soil - moderately fertile. Will not tolerate waterlogging.
  • Full sun
