  • Good to know - introduced into UK by George Forrest (1873-1932) in 1913.
  • Pests & Diseases - vine weevils, scale insects, honey fungus, powdery mildew, bud blast.
  • Place of Origin - Tibet, China, Burma
  • Hardy - average winter - Hardy through most of the UK apart from inland valleys, at altitude and central/northerly locations. May suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in harsh winters in cold gardens. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F) - borderline
  • Height - 10m (33ft)
  • Spread - 10m (33ft)
  • Evergreen - very large oblong to lance-shaped, glossy, dark green leaves to 75cm (30in) long with a smooth silver to buff indumentum beneath
  • Tall Shrub - or small tree. Produces trusses of 20-30 widely bell-shaped flowers 5cm (2in) long marked crimson inside
