Commonly known as Black elder, Common elder, Pipe tree

Cream coloured fragrant flowers and black fruits

  • Deciduous - pinnate leaves to 25cm (10in) long, each having 5 oval, toothed, mid-green leaflets.

  • Spread - 6m (20ft)
  • Tall Shrub - upright, bushy shrub with stout shoots. Produces flowers in flattened panicles to 20cm (8in) across followed by spherical, glossy, black fruit.
  • Hardy - very cold winter - Hardy in all of UK and northern Europe. Plant can possibly withstand temperatures down to -20°C (-4°F)
  • Full sun
  • Partial shade
  • Harmful if eaten - These will give you an upset tummy, so please don't eat any of these.
  • May cause skin allergy or irritant - Having skin or eye contact with these plants could result in an allergic reaction, burning or rash.
