SOLANUM crispum 'Glasnevin'

Commonly known as Chilean potato tree

Hardy and quick growing wall shrub, flowers violet-blue

  • Evergreen - to semi evergreen. Ovate, dark-green leaves to 12cm (5in) long.
  • Blue - violet blue
  • Height - 6m (20ft)
  • Climber - Some of these climbing plants will need trellis or wire supports if grown on walls or fences. Other grow aerial roots and are self-clinging - scrambling climber. Produces flowers 2.5cm (1in) across in terminal clusters to 15cm (6in) across.
  • Hardy - average winter - Hardy through most of the UK apart from inland valleys, at altitude and central/northerly locations. May suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in harsh winters in cold gardens. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F)
  • Against a wall - preferably south or west facing.
  • Full sun
  • Caution, toxic if eaten - Do not eat these plants.
  • Additional Features - Good to know - - more floriferous and hardier than the species.
  • Pests & Diseases - aphids
  • Place of origin - Peru, Chile
  • Resistant to honey fungus - These plants have little or few problems with honey fungus.
  • Hardiness - Frost hardy (down to -5) -
  • Pruning group - Pruning group 8
    Suitable for: Wall trained shrubs and less vigorous climbers.
    Action: For climbers 'spur prune' by cutting back 3-4 buds of the permanent framework. For wall trained shrubs cut back flowered shoots to within 2-4 buds of permanent framework.
    When: Annually after flowers if on previous year's growth, or in late Winter or Spring if on current year's growth.
