Commonly known as Kowhai

Lacy dark green foliage and tubular golden yellow flowers.

  • Evergreen - pinnate leaves to 15cm (6in) long each with up to 40 pairs of ovate or elliptic-oblong dark-green leaflets on silky shoots.
  • Yellow - golden yellow
  • Height - 2m (6½ft) or more.
  • Spread - 2m (6½ft) or more.
  • Medium shrub - Typically grow to around 4-6 feet in height - spreading shrub. Produces small, axillary, pendent racemes to 5cm (2in) of flowers 5cm (2in) long with all petals pointing forwards.
  • Hardy - average winter - Hardy through most of the UK apart from inland valleys, at altitude and central/northerly locations. May suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in harsh winters in cold gardens. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F)

    When: When dormant in the late winter/early spring. Some in the summer/autumn to prevent bleeding of sap.
