TWEEDIA caerulea

Commonly known as Oxypetalum

(Oxypetalum caeruleum) - an unusual and attractive twining plant with clusters of clear blue flowers tinged with green, purple and then lilac. Mature plants may have flowers with all three colours at the same time

  • Evergreen - oblong-lance-shaped, downy, light green leaves 5-10cm (2-4in) long, usually heart-shaped at the base
  • Blue - clear blue ageing to purple
  • Height - 60-100cm (24-39in)
  • Climber - Some of these climbing plants will need trellis or wire supports if grown on walls or fences. Other grow aerial roots and are self-clinging - erect subshrub with twining, white-hairy stems which need support
  • Tender - cool or frost free greenhouse - Tolerant of low temperatures, but not surviving being frozen. Except in frost-free inner-city areas or coastal extremities requires glasshouse conditions. Plant can withstand temperatures down to 1°C (34°F)

These plants need to be grown in a conservatory or cool greenhouse or at least brought inside for the winter - loam based potting compost, JI No. 2, full light
