      Gall mites on leaves, scale insects on bark, aphids(producing sticky honeydew), honey fungus, Phytophthora root rot.

      Mongolia, northern China.

      Glossy, dark-green leaves to 4cm (1½in) long, blue-green beneath and red when young. Rounded to triangular in shape, deeply cut into 3 sharply toothed lobes, often with 2 lateral lobes.

      Rounded tree or tall shrub. Produces clusters of up to 30 flowers 2cm (¾ in) across.

      Suitable for: Deciduous and evergreen trees, and some deciduous shrubs.
      Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Prune wayward or crossing branches to maintain a healthy framework.
      When: When dormant in the late winter/early spring. Some in the summer/autumn to prevent bleeding of sap.
