6th January 2021. In line with the current government lockdown rules, Burncoose Nurseries is closed to visitors. However at present we are able to offer click and collect to local customers. This will be weekdays only, not weekends.
Mail order is continuing as normal. However please allow extra time for the couriers to deliver, once despatched from us. Sorry to say that some depots are experiencing high volumes of traffic, also staff shortages.
CALCEOLARIA
Commonly known as Pouch flower, Slipper flower
Usually candidates for cool glasshouses or summer bedding.
Genus of about 300 species of annuals, biennials, perennials and shrubs, some of them scandent, fron diverse habitats ranging from dry scrub to alpine regions.
They occur in temperate and tropical areas of Mexico, Central and South America and the Falkland Islands.

Additional Features - Good to know - - grown for the colourful 2-lipped, pouched flowers resembling slippers.

Place of origin - areas of dry scrub to alpine regions in temperate and tropical areas of Mexico, Central and South America and Falkland Islands.

Garden Location/Conditions - Greenhouse / conservatory - Not the sort of plants to be grown outside where there are likely to be frosts. These plants need to be grown in a conservatory or cool greenhouse or at least brought inside for the winter - under glass grow in loam-based compost ( JI No. 2) in bright, filtered light.
