AGAPETES serpens



Grows up to 6ft eventually with bright red flowers and darker markings on pendent slender branches, like small lanterns. Tender except in the mildest areas

  • Good to know - can be 6-10ft if trained as a climber. If grown under glass use ericaceous potting compost in bright, filtered light.

  • Place of Origin - Nepal, Bhutan, India (Assam)
  • Height - 60-90cm (24-36in)
  • Spread - 2-3m (6-10ft)
  • Evergreen - small, crowded, lance-shaped leaves to 2cm (¾in) long, rich green and glossy.
  • Medium shrub - Typically grow to around 4-6 feet in height - initially erect, then arching shrub. Produces usually solitary, narrowly urn-shaped flowers 2cm (¾in) long from the leaf axils. Flowers have V-shaped darker red markings.
  • Tender - cool or frost free greenhouse - Tolerant of low temperatures, but not surviving being frozen. Except in frost-free inner-city areas or coastal extremities requires glasshouse conditions. Plant can withstand temperatures down to 1°C (34°F)
  • Fertile moist well-drained soil - moderately fertile
  • Neutral to acid soil - benefits from added composted bark
  • Against a wall
  • Partial shade - tolerates some sun if grown well
