Evergreen - elliptic to broadly elliptic, leathery, coarsely toothed leaves to 25cm (10in) long, deep green above and light green beneath.

Tall Shrub - stout, smooth green stems. Male flowers are green, yellow or purplish red; female are yellowish and are carried on shorter panicles. Fruits are cylindrical, to 2cm (¾in) long, and ripen to dark red in the following winter
