RUBUS calophyllus

Commonly known as Bramble



Beautiful foliage with large ovate leaves which are silvery and silky-haired beneath. Needs a sheltered position

  • Deciduous - large leaves 13-18cm (5-7in) long and 5-8cm (2-3in) wide, coarsely serrated with finely-pointed teeth. Conspicuous veins.
  • Red - wine red
  • Height - 1.5m (5ft)
  • Spread - 1.5m (5ft)
  • Medium shrub - Typically grow to around 4-6 feet in height - clump-forming shrub with whitish stems with minute, recurved prickles. Deep wine-red flowers, 1.5cm (¾in) across, in dense 2-7 flowered axillary panicles
  • Hardy - cold winter - Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open/exposed sites or central/northern locations. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)
  • Full sun
  • Additional Features - Pests & Diseases - grey mould (Botrytis), yellowing leaf virus
  • Place of Origin - eastern Himalayas, Myanmar
  • Soil Conditions - Fertile well drained soil - moderately fertile
  • Neutral to acid soil
