Genus of about 7 species of deciduous trees and shrubs from woodland in eastern Asia and Polynesia.
In regions with cooler summers if remains as a large shrub.
The bark is used to make high-quality paper and the inner bark, tapa, a cloth used now as ceremonial costume in Pacific Island communities.
B. papyrifera is the only widely cultivated species.
