FATSIA polycarpa 'Green Fingers'

Commonly known as False castor oil plant, Japanese fig leaf palm

Longer stalked, less glossy leaves than F. japonica. A recently introduced Taiwanese species which is frost hardy to -10º and has made a very attractive free standing shrub here

  • Evergreen - rounded leaves to 30cm (12in) long with 5-9 elliptic, toothed lobes with long, slender points
  • Height - 3.5m (11ft)
  • Spread - 2m (6½ft)
  • Tall Shrub - young branches, leaves and inflorescence initially brown-hairy, later smooth. Flowers in the form of rounded clusters to 2.5cm (1in) of about 20 appear in early winter followed by spherical, purplish fruits in spring
  • Half hardy - unheated greenhouse / mild winter - Hardy in coastal and relatively mild parts of the UK except in severe winters and a risk from sudden (early) frosts. May be hardy elsewhere with wall shelter or good micro-climate. Likely to be damaged or killed in cold winters. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -5°C (23°F)

  • Partial shade - light, dappled shade. Shelter from cold winds.
  • Additional Features - Pests & Diseases - - mealybugs and scale insects under glass. Outdoors cold winds can cause dieback and blackening of foliage

    Suitable for: Evergreen shrubs or climbers that need little to no pruning.

    When: Annually after flowering if on previous year's growth, or in later Winter or Spring if flowering on current year's growth, or as requires.
