6th January 2021. In line with the current government lockdown rules, Burncoose Nurseries is closed to visitors. However at present we are able to offer click and collect to local customers. This will be weekdays only, not weekends. Mail order is continuing as normal. However please allow extra time for the couriers to deliver, once despatched from us. Clusters of cream, through pink to red bells in spring and foliage which colours various shades of red in autumn.

Genus of 12 species of mainly deciduous shrubs from scrub and woodland from the Himalayas to Japan


  • Deciduous - oval to obovate, bright green leaves to 7cm (2¾in) long, downy beneath turning orange and red in autumn
  • Cream
  • Striped, Veined or Multicoloured - veined with pink
  • Height - 2.5-4m (8-13ft)
  • Spread - 3m (10ft)
  • Tall Shrub - upright shrub or small tree. Produces flowers in umbels of 8-20
  • Hardy - cold winter - Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open/exposed sites or central/northern locations. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)
  • Full sun
  • Partial shade
  • Additional Features - Good to know - - best grown in an open site in a woodland garden
  • Pests & Diseases - none

  • Resistant to honey fungus - These plants have little or few problems with honey fungus.
