  • Evergreen - pinnate, dark green leaves to 40cm (16in) long, with 2-4 pairs of large, elliptic or oblong, few-spined leaflets to 12cm (4¾in) long, with a larger terminal leaflet. Leaves are a striking chalky white beneath, which disappears with age.
  • Purple - Shades of purple/mauve/lilac/violet - purple red outside
  • White - white inside

  • Medium shrub - Typically grow to around 4-6 feet in height - low-growing, loose, open, sometimes suckering shrub. Produces distinctive small bell-shaped flowers carried singly in slender, loosely branched open sprays 25-35cm (10-14in) long followed by bloomy black fruits on red stalks
  • Hardy - cold winter - Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open/exposed sites or central/northern locations. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)
