QUERCUS buckleyi

Commonly known as Texas red oak

Noted for its excellent autumn colours this newly introduced species is growing well at Caerhays

  • Deciduous - large, deeply lobed, bright green leaves 8-20cm (3-8in) long with 4-11 lobes turn red and orange in autumn
  • Height - 9m (30ft)
  • Spread - 8m (26ft)
  • Tree - dark grey, smoothish bark, furrowed into ridges on lower trunk and older branches. Egg-shaped acorns mature in their second year
  • Hardy - very cold winter - Hardy in all of UK and northern Europe. Plant can possibly withstand temperatures down to -20°C (-4°F)
  • Full sun
  • Additional Features - Pests & Diseases - aphids, gall wasps, oak wilt, honey fungus, powdery mildew
  • Place of origin - USA. Central Texas and Oklahoma
  • Hardiness - Fully hardy
  • Seasonal Interest - Autumn
