STYRAX japonicus 'Sohuksan'

Commonly known as Japanese snowbell

A vigorous form with large leaves and the largest flowers of any Styrax we have seen growing at Burncoose

  • Deciduous - elliptic-oblong, minutely toothed, leathery, dark green leaves 10cm (4in) or more long turning yellow in autumn
  • White
  • Height - 10m (33ft)
  • Spread - 8m (26ft)
  • Tree - graceful, spreading tree producing flowers on long stalks singly or in clusters of 3-6 along the undersides of the branches
  • Hardy - cold winter - Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open/exposed sites or central/northern locations. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)
  • Full sun

  • Additional Features - Good to know - - syn. 'Sohuksan'. Produces larger bells. Can be pruned after flowering to restrict its size
  • Ornamental bark - on older branches the bark splits to reveal orange inner bark providing winter interest
