ACONITUM

Genus of 100 species of perennials and biennials mainly from mountainous grassland or scrub in the northern hemisphere.

Suitable for cooler conditions they make good subjects for a woodland garden.Twining species can be grown through shrubs for support. Taller aconites require staking.

Plants are highly toxic and contact with foliage can irritate the skin.

It is represented in the UK by the native A.napellus, Monkshood, from the shape of the sepals.


  • Red - wine red
  • Height - 2-3m (6½-10ft)
  • Spread - 30-60cm (12-24in)
  • Climber - Some of these climbing plants will need trellis or wire supports if grown on walls or fences. Other grow aerial roots and are self-clinging - perennial, climbing twiner with ovate, 3- to 5-lobed leaves. Produces large, hooded flowers
  • Herbaceous - Early in the year, typically January till end of March, herbaceous plants might be supplied in 9cm pots to ensure timely despatch.
  • Very hardy - Hardy in the severest continental climates including exposed upland locations in the UK. Plant can withstand temperatures < -20 (-4°F)
  • Full sun - will tolerate full sun where soils remains moist
