PROTEA Banksia coccinea

Commonly known as Albany banksia, Scarlet banksia, Waddib

Shrub, small tree in the Protea family. Oblong leaves and red flowers

  • Evergreen - alternate, oblong, toothed leaves to 10cm (4in) long, deep green above, white-downy beneath
  • Red - scarlet
  • Height - 4-8m (13-26ft)
  • Spread - 1.5-4m (5-13ft)
  • Tall Shrub - erect, sparsely branched shrub. Produces cylindrical flower heads to 8cm (3in) long
  • Tender - cool or frost free greenhouse - Tolerant of low temperatures, but not surviving being frozen. Except in frost-free inner-city areas or coastal extremities requires glasshouse conditions. Plant can withstand temperatures down to 1°C (34°F)
  • Will grow outside in milder locations - This could include plants which would survive happily in a greenhouse or conservatory if not in a mild location. If you have a sheltered spot in your garden then it may do well here.
  • Full sun
  • Additional Features - Pests & Diseases - - Phytophthora root rot. Plants will become chlorotic if soil contains too much phosphate or lime
  • Place of origin - Australia (Western Australia)
  • Resistant to honey fungus - These plants have little or few problems with honey fungus.
