CALYCANTHUS floridus

Commonly known as Carolina allspice, Carolina sweetshrub

(fertilis) - shiny green leaves with attractive deep carmine magnolia-like flowers.

  • Deciduous - oval dark-green leaves to 12cm (5in) long, sometimes turning yellow in autumn.
  • Red - carmine
  • Height - 2.5m (8ft)
  • Spread - 3m (10ft)
  • Tall Shrub - bushy, spreading shrub. Flowers 4-5cm (1½-2in) across with numerous strap-shaped petals fading to brown at the tips. Flowers are solitary and are produced terminally or from the axils of the current year's growth.
  • Hardy - cold winter - Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open/exposed sites or central/northern locations. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)
