XANTHOCYPARIS vietnamensis

Commonly known as Vietnamese golden cypress

Reddish-brown trunk with exfoliating bark. Spreading branches

  • Evergreen - wide-spreading, linear, juvenile leaves 2cm (¾in) long in whorls of 4. Adult leaves are scale-like in flattened sprays
  • Height - 10m (33ft)
  • Spread - 6m (20ft)
  • Conifer - tree with soft, red-brown bark and light to mid-green foliage.Spherical green female cones 1cm (½in) long ripen to dark brown. Very small male cones are ovoid and greenish
  • Hardy - cold winter - Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open/exposed sites or central/northern locations. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)
  • Full sun - shelter from cold, drying winds
  • Partial shade - dappled shade
  • Additional Features - Endangered in the wild - These plants are listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's list of 'Red Plants'. This is a list of threatened species in the wild, they are either critically, endangered or vulnerable to extinction. - critically endangered
  • Good to know - young, soft needles and older, scaly sprays occur on the same stems giving a feathery appearance
  • Ornamental bark
  • Pests & Diseases - aphids. Prone to Phytophthera root rot and honey fungus
  • Place of origin - northern Vietnam (Ha Giang Province). Discovered in 1999
