  • Good to know - train and tie in shoots until aerial roots have taken hold.
  • Pests & Diseases - powdery mildew, leaf spot, scale insects, mealy bugs,whiteflies.
  • Place of Origin - mid 19th Century hybrid of C. radicans (America) and C. grandiflora (China).

  • Climber - Some of these climbing plants will need trellis or wire supports if grown on walls or fences. Other grow aerial roots and are self-clinging - woody climber with aerial roots. Produces terminal panicles of 6-12 trumpet-shaped flowers.
  • Deciduous - pinnate, dark green leaves to 30cm (12in) long, composed of 7-11 ovate leaflets.
  • Hardy - average winter - Hardy through most of the UK apart from inland valleys, at altitude and central/northerly locations. May suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in harsh winters in cold gardens. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F)
  • Fertile moist well-drained soil
  • Against a wall - in colder areas grow against a warm wall in full sun.
  • Full sun
  • Partial shade - can tolerate some shade in warmer areas.
  • Flower Colour - Red - salmon red
