CERATOSTIGMA plumbaginoides

Commonly known as Shrubby plumbago




  • Good to know - introduced into UK by Robert Fortune in 1845.
  • Pests & Diseases - powdery mildew.
  • Place of Origin - western China.
  • Hardy - average winter - Hardy through most of the UK apart from inland valleys, at altitude and central/northerly locations. May suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in harsh winters in cold gardens. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F)
  • Height - 45cm (18in)
  • Spread - 30cm (12in)
  • Alpine or rock plant - These plants prefer well drained soil and are generally dwarf in habit.
  • Deciduous - oval, bright-green leaves to 9cm (3in) long with bristly margins. Red tints in autumn.
  • Ground cover - These plants are typically low growing and spread quickly to inhibit weed growth on areas of bare soil - rhizomatous, spreading perennial. with erect, tred stems. Flowers to 2cm (¾in) acrossin terminal spikes.
  • Medium to light, fertile, well drained soil
