  • Evergreen - elliptic to lance-shaped, softly-hairy, mid-green leaves 2.5-5cm (1-2in) long.
  • Shades of pink - All shades of pink through to Carmine (red) - carmine pink
  • Height - 2.5m (8ft)
  • Spread - 1.5-2.5m (5-8ft)
  • Tall Shrub - upright, often semi-scandent (uses lax stems to aid support) shrub. Long-tubed, pendent flowers 6-7cm (2½-3in) long in terminal corymbs
  • Half hardy - unheated greenhouse / mild winter - Hardy in coastal and relatively mild parts of the UK except in severe winters and a risk from sudden (early) frosts. May be hardy elsewhere with wall shelter or good micro-climate. Likely to be damaged or killed in cold winters. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -5°C (23°F)
  • Full sun - warm sheltered site.
  • Additional Features - Good to know - - an introduction by Cornish plant hunter William Lobb (1809-1864). First UK flowering in May 1848.
  • Pests & Diseases - red spider mite, whitefly - more usually under glass.
  • Place of origin - Peru, northern Chile, Bolivia.
  • Flower Shape - Tubular -
  • Garden Location/Conditions - Greenhouse / conservatory - Not the sort of plants to be grown outside where there are likely to be frosts. These plants need to be grown in a conservatory or cool greenhouse or at least brought inside for the winter
  • Hardiness - Half hardy (down to 0) -

  • Pruning group - Pruning group 6
    Suitable for: Evergreen shrubs or climbers that need little to no pruning.
    Action: Trim back shoots that spoil symmetry and to fit available space.
    When: Annually after flowering if on previous year's growth, or in later Winter or Spring if flowering on current year's growth, or as requires.
