      The native hazel. 'Lamb's tails' are the long, male catkins. Pliant hazel rods have been used by man since prehistoric times. Makes very good artist's charcoal. Wildlife plant. Food for more than 70 species of insect. Bird plant.

    • Tall Shrub
      Tree-like shrub. Pendent yellow catkins 4-6cm (1½-2½in) long appear in late winter and early spring. Edible nuts in autumn.

      Suitable for: Deciduous and evergreen trees, and some deciduous shrubs.
      Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Prune wayward or crossing branches to maintain a healthy framework.
      When: When dormant in the late winter/early spring. Some in the summer/autumn to prevent bleeding of sap.
