      Long, slender seedling leaves to 60cm (24in) long and downward pointing. Seedling leaves are ovate to lance-shaped, coarsely toothed or lobed. Mature leaves are linear. rigid, with red midribs and spine-tipped teeth. On mature plants leaves develop into 3- or 5-palmate form, leathery, with linear or sword-shaped leaflets 20cm (8in) long.

    • Tall Shrub
      unbranched for many years. Mature plants develop a rounded head. Produces flowers in umbels 7-10cm (3-4in) across, followed on pollinated female plants by spherical black fruit 5mm (¼in) across.
    • Half hardy - unheated greenhouse / mild winter
      Hardy in coastal and relatively mild parts of the UK except in severe winters and a risk from sudden (early) frosts. May be hardy elsewhere with wall shelter or good micro-climate. Likely to be damaged or killed in cold winters. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -5°C (23°F)
