    ASTER

Commonly known as Frostflower, Michaelmas daisy, Starwort

    All Flower SEPT-OCT

Genus of about 180 species of annuals, biennials, perennials and subshrubs from a variety of habitats in the northern hemisphere.

There are asters for almost all garden situations and the daisylike flowers come in all shades of white, blue, pink and purple. A. amellus and the hybrid A. frikartii are probably the most popular. These are both late summer flowerers which are invaluable for late-flying insects.

Their popular name, Michaelmas Daisies, arises from their peak blooming time around 29th September, Michaelmas.

    A. novi-belgii ( Symphotrichum novi-belgii) is the introduced popular garden Daisy found commonly as a garden escape around urban areas and at roadsides.

    A. tripolium, Sea aster is a native perennial common on coasts and was a popular garden plant in the past.
