      Our native birch. Excellent wildlife plant for insects and birds.
    • Medicinal properties
      Wine from the sap was used as a medicine. Tar oil from the bark is used for skin conditions and compounds are being researched for anti-cancer properties.

      Tree with pendent, warty branches and peeling white bark. Yellow-brown male catkins 6cm (2½in) long in early spring.

      Pruning: Minimal pruning required. Prune wayward or crossing branches to maintain a healthy framework.
      When: When dormant in the late winter/early spring. Some in the summer/autumn to prevent bleeding of sap.
