May Conservatory & Greenhouse Tips

Watering

If you grow cacti and succulents now is the time to increase the amount of water. The Christmas and Easter cacti, and the Epiphylliums (all with the flattened stem leaves) need to be kept moist throughout the summer and need regular liquid feeding.

Bougainvillea and Plumbago capensis should be kept well fed and watered throughout the flowering season but never let them become waterlogged.

Pruning

Either prune back or train in the long extension growths on Jasminum polyanthum before it gets a tangled mass.

Trim the dead flowers off Cytisus racemosus (Genista fragrans) and prune to shape where necessary.

Feeding

Oranges, lemons and other citrus plants need regular feeding with their summer feed, keeping an eye open for attacks of scale and spraying if necessary with Pravado.
