About Us
Burncoose Nurseries is one of several businesses forming part of the family run Caerhays Estate managed by Charles Williams.
The nursery celebrated 40 years at Burncoose in 2024.
In the 1980s Burncoose was a traditional mail order business attending shows throughout the country to recruit new customers. Today the nursery's mail order business is over 85% online and Burncoose has adapted accordingly while remaining one of the top 5 UK plant mail order businesses both in terms of the huge range of trees shrubs herbaceous and ornamental plants available for purchase on its website. Also in continuing to offer many new and unusual plants each year for the discerning gardener.
Charles trained as a merchant banker before returning to Cornwall to run Caerhays Castle Gardens and Burncoose Nurseries. Caerhays is holder of the Plant Heritage National Collection of magnolias and, in the 1920s Caerhays bred the first x williamsii strain of camellia which are noted for their hardiness and floriferousness. Today there are about 10,000 x williamsii varieties of camellia grown worldwide. Caerhays and Burncoose continue to breed and propagate new magnolia, camellia and rhododendron hybrids many of which are available on this website.
