Chelsea Flower Show 19 - 23rd May 2015
UPDATE - 18th May - Burncoose have been awarded plant of the year 2015 at Chelsea Flower Show.
The theme of the Burncoose Nurseries stand this year is intended to increase public awareness of the little known fact that many of the plants which we grow in our gardens are actually threatened with extinction in their native habitats in the wild. Consequently we should all be encouraged to do more to counter the threats of climate change and deforestation by growing these threatened wild species more widely at home.
The IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) is the world’s oldest and largest global environmental organisation. The IUCN produce the Red List of Threatened Species which tracks the changing environment and the consequent impact on wild species. This, in turn, leads to a better understanding of how to protect and conserve the world’s most endangered plants. Some plant species have already vanished from the wild and exist only in botanical collections while others continue to survive only because of the work of specialist nurseries such as Burncoose.
Critically Endangered – these plants face an extremely high risk of extinction and there is a 50% probability that they will become extinct in the wild within 10 years - click here to see the list and view which ones are available to buy from Burncoose.
Endangered – these plants face a 20% potential threat of extinction in the wild in the next 20 years
Vulnerable – these plants face a 10% threat of extinction in the wild in the next 100 years
If you cannot come to our stand you can see below the slides which will be running on our screens at the show.
