February Conservatory & Greenhouse Tips

Feeding Pot Plants

Start feeding with granular surface feed (e.g. VITAX Q4) as growth emerges and you start a normal watering programme after Winter dormancy.  You can buy vitax from us, when you order your plants.

Cleaning Greenhouses

Just before the new growth starts to emerge and the weather warms up it is time to spring clean your greenhouse.   Prune and shape climbing plants which will flower on the new growth rather than the old.   Cut out any dead wood and cut those plants which enjoy it down to ground level (e.g. Fuchsias).   Clear up all old dead leaves which may harbour pests and diseases and get ready for Spring.

Pot Bound Plants

While spring cleaning check the root growth on all potted plants especially those which will go outside in the Summer. Where there is any sign of them being pot pound pot on to the next sized pot.   Over-potting into too large a pot will encourage tremendous foliage growth but not necessarily flowers.

Banana Plants

The (fairly) hardy Banana – Musa basjoo – (left) makes a wonderful foliage plant in the conservatory with its huge green leaves.

However you do need space to try this plant and the patience for it to produce bananas which it eventually will.

Boronias

Boronias should now be showing their first flowers and can be brought briefly indoors to enjoy their perfume. (below)
