Landscaping The Rectory at Old Windsor

The owner of this newly converted rectory situated in a village close to Windsor Great Park approached Burncoose Nurseries at the Chelsea Flower Show requesting a makeover for his garden. In reality, despite its history and a wonderful vista from the front of the house down to a large lake, the garden contained virtually no plants. The borders around the house had a distinctly ‘municipal’ appearance with little colour, few interesting plants and nothing in keeping with the type of garden one would expect an old rectory to have.

The design theme from Burncoose has been to create a woodland garden with rare and usual plants to provide colour and interest throughout the year. Plantings have been arranged in groups either side of the lawn while leaving open the vista to the lake. This has been achieved with a variety of spring and summer flowering trees (prunus, stewartia, cornus, magnolia, acer and betula) matched by clumps of rhododendron, camellias, azalea and hydrangea. The lake has been enhanced with willow, bamboo, gunnera and other water loving plants. The garden will take several years to grow and develop but will make a radical difference to the overall setting and intrinsic value of the property.
