In the heath family. Genus of 2 low-growing, wiry stemmed evergreens found in acid peat bogs in the Arctic and cool, temperate regions of the northern hemisphere.

Native. Declining and confined to central Britain from mid Wales to southern Scotland.

County flower of Cardiganshire/Ceredigion and Kircudbrightshire.

Named by Carl Linnaeus during hie 1732 expedition to Lapland.

    Typically only grows to a maximum of one or two feet in height but there will be some exceptions.
