Lotus is a diverse genus of about 150 species of annuals, short-lived perennials and deciduous, semi-evergreen or evergreen subshrubs found throughout most of the world.

Pea-like flowers and found in pasture and dry, rocky areas.

The native, often found in lawns, is recorded as having more than 70 local names.

L. pedunculatus, Large bird's foot trefoil, another native, is found in damp. grassy places.
