Commonly known as Yew


  • Evergreen
  • Conifer - dioecious- male and female needed for berries. Male flowers are small, yellow and shed pollen. Female seeds ripen in centre of waxy, bright-red aril.
  • Medium shrub - Typically grow to around 4-6 feet in height
  • Tree
  • Full shade
  • Full sun
  • Partial shade
  • Caution, toxic if eaten - Do not eat these plants. - dangerous to humans and animals
  • Additional Features - Good to know - - good as specimen plants, for hedging or topiary
  • Medicinal properties - well known for providing the (originally named) taxol drug used in cancer therapy.
  • Pests & Diseases - tortrix moth caterpillars, vine weevil, yew scale, phytophthora root rot.
  • Place of origin - from northern temperate regions to the Phillippines and Central America
  • Soil Conditions - Alkaline / Chalk loving -
  • Fertile well drained soil
  • Tolerates all - grows in chalky or acidic soil but will not succeed on poorly drained soils
