PHYTOLACCA americana

Commonly known as American pokeweed

Upright growing perennial with white to pink flowers and then striking blackish, maroon berries which are highly toxic to humans but readily eaten by birds

  • Deciduous - ovate to lance-shaped leaves 25-30cm (6-12in) long
  • White - white to pink
  • Height - to 4m (13ft)
  • Spread - 1m (39in)
  • Herbaceous - Early in the year, typically January till end of March, herbaceous plants might be supplied in 9cm pots to ensure timely despatch. - erect, unpleasant-smelling perennial with branching, red-marked stems and fleshy roots. Small flowers are followed by blackish maroon berries
  • Hardy - average winter - Hardy through most of the UK apart from inland valleys, at altitude and central/northerly locations. May suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in harsh winters in cold gardens. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F)
