This is a tremendous plant for growing in hot dry coastal locations or, indeed, in the greenhouse. Tenderness aside, it must rate as one of the easiest plants to propagate and what else has such near black rosettes of leaves?
It is easy enough to think of this plant as a small growing succulent but, if grown in a sheltered enough and frost free location, it can and readily will develop into a 6ft tall erect but branching shrub. The rosettes of spoon shaped dark black leaves will become 6in or more long. In spring the plant produces a tall flower spike with large panicles (12in long) of many bright yellow flowers. These are most attractive offset by the black leaves.
