    Or small tree. Peeling, or deeply furrowed, bark. Flowers are so productive as to obscure the foliage. Birds eat the fruits.

    Hardy through most of the UK apart from inland valleys, at altitude and central/northerly locations. May suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in harsh winters in cold gardens. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F)

    Introduced into UK by Robert Fortune in 1845. Translates as snow flowers. Some plants have male or female flowers only and may not fruit.

    The root was used, historically, for fever relief and more recently in jaundice treatment.
