    PAPAVER

    Commonly known as Poppy

    JUL-AUG

Genus of 70 species of annuals, biennials and perennials occurring in a wide range of habitats from lowlands to high mountains.

Most are from central and southern Europe and temperate Asia, a few from South Africa, Australia, western North America and subarctic regions.

The native annual, Corn poppy, P.rhoeas was once considered a common weed of arable fields. Now it is most likely to occur as part of intentional wild seeding.

Other natives are the Long-headed poppy, P. dubium from waste places and arable land and, possibly,  Prickly poppy, P. argemone with long, bristly seed heads.

Flowers are followed by the distinctive pepper-pot seed pods.
