Genus of about 150 species of herbaceous and evergreen perennials and shrubs mainly growing in damp grassland and woodland or by water in subtropical regions, including South Africa, and northern temperate regions.
The UK native is L. salicaria, purple loosestrife, a valuable wildlife plant, particularly attractive to long-tongued insects such as brimstone butterflies, elephant hawk-moths and red-tailed bumblebees.
