AESCULUS chinensis

Commonly known as Buckeye, Chinese horse chestnut

Small white flowers in long racemes on this slow growing and rare species

  • Deciduous - 5-palmate, occasionally 7-palmate, glossy, mid-green leaves composed of narrowly oblong, finely pointed leaflets 20cm (8in) or more long.

  • Tree - slow-growing, spreading tree. Produces flowers with protruding stamens followed by rough-skinned fruit.
  • Hardy - cold winter - Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open/exposed sites or central/northern locations. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)
  • Full sun - prefers a hot, but not dry, site.
  • Additional Features - Good to know - possibly a cultivated form similar to 'wilsonii'. Frequently found near Chinese temples.
  • Pests & Diseases - scale insects, canker, coral spot, leaf blotch.
