    Ovate to lance-shaped, doubly-toothed dark green leaves to 10cm (4in) long, deeply veined above and tapering to the points.

    Small, spreading tree or large shrub with grey, fissured, scaly bark. Produces pendulous male catkins to 5cm (2in) long on old shoots. Fruiting clusters to 6cm (2½in) long consist of densely overlapping toothed bracts, green at first, turning brown.
