TreeSmall, spreading tree or large shrub with grey, fissured, scaly bark. Produces pendulous male catkins to 5cm (2in) long on old shoots. Fruiting clusters to 6cm (2½in) long consist of densely overlapping toothed bracts, green at first, turning brown.
