MAGNOLIA
MAGNOLIAS, named after the French botanist Pierre Magnol, are an ancient genus and it is thought that pollination was by beetles as the trees appeared before bees. Fossilised remains from the family are 95 million years old.
The main centre of distribution is eastern and southeastern Asia with a secondary centre in eastern North America, Central America, the West Indies and South America.
LARGE and SPECIMEN sized magnolias are almost all grafted plants. Many are also very rare.
LARGE plants are 2-3 year old grafts and SPECIMEN plants 3-5 year old grafts.
Different Magnolia varieties grow at very different speeds and therefore the size of a LARGE or a SPECIMEN plant and the exact pot size it is delivered in can vary markedly for plants of identical age and also on time of year, since Magnolias can grow very quickly.
Many more magnolia pictures can be found on the Caerhays Website and The Garden Diary.

MAGNOLIA 'China Town'
(syn 'Jing Ning') - slow growing stellata type magnolia with pink flowers
MAGNOLIA 'Cleopatra'
similar in colour to M. 'Lanarth' this new New Zealand hybrid is a rich reddish purple with a metallic sheen
MAGNOLIA 'Columnar Pink'
pink tulip-shaped flowers.
MAGNOLIA 'Copeland Court'
a compact, erect and symmetrical growing plant with dense branching and crimson pink flowers
MAGNOLIA 'Coral Lake'
coral pink with vertical yellow stripe. Fragrant.
MAGNOLIA cylindrica 'Hohman'
pink-tinted white flowers
MAGNOLIA cylindrica 'Lv Xing'
the flowers are pure white with a triangular flash of pink at the base of the petal which runs in a line right to the top. An attractive new magnolia with a rather different flower. Misnamed 'Sunrise'
MAGNOLIA 'Daphne'
in our opinion this is easily the best and darkest yellow yet to appear on the market. The flowers do come out with the leaves most years but this is genuinely a plant for the smaller garden. A triumph for Philippe de Spoelberch's magnolia breeding in Belgium.
MAGNOLIA 'David Clulow'
Gresham hybrid with large white cup-shaped flowers which have a slight pink flush at the base
MAGNOLIA dawsoniana 'Chyverton Red'
Reddish to crimson flowers on this dawsoniana hybrid bred at Chyverton in Cornwall
MAGNOLIA 'Daybreak'
unusual fragrant light rose-pink flowers. M. xbrooklynensis 'Woodsman' was the seed parent in a cross with M. 'Tina Durio'. Highly recommended
MAGNOLIA delavayi
the most spectacular of all Chinese evergreen magnolias. Fragrant white flowers which fade to cream persistantly from JUN-NOV. In windier spots it is best grown against a wall
MAGNOLIA denudata
scented pure white cup-shaped flowers
