  • Evergreen - bamboo-like foliage to 12cm (5in) long, reddish when young.
  • Height - 12m (40ft)
  • Spread - 10m (30ft)
  • Tree - smooth, dark-grey bark. Solitary acorns in distinctively ringed cups.
  • Hardy - cold winter - Hardy in most places throughout the UK even in severe winters. May not withstand open/exposed sites or central/northern locations. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -15°C (5°F)
  • Full sun
  • Additional Features - Good to know - introduced into UK by Robert Fortune, Scottish plant hunter, 1854.
  • Pests & Diseases - aphids, gall wasps, oak wilt, honey fungus, powdery mildew, bracket fungus.
  • Place of origin - southern China, Laos, Japan.
  • Hardiness - Fully hardy
