Unknown to most of the rest of the country Storm Goretti achieved hurricane strength in Cornwall on the evening of 8th January 2026. It was not quite as bad as the hurricane of 25th January 1990, but the damage to Caerhays Castle Gardens was immense and has delayed the opening of the gardens there until 2nd March. Fortunately Burncoose Nurseries escaped the worst of the hurricane damage although the clean up took several weeks and there remain a number of huge fallen trees to deal with. Nevertheless, Burncoose Woodland Gardens remain open 7 days a week.

As Magnolia mania takes hold in March do please spend a few minutes reminding yourselves of what an amazing spectacle these huge Asiatic trees can, and do, produce in the garden.
