  • Deciduous - dark-green, pinnate leaves, 2.5-10cm (1-4in) long, composed of 7-11 toothed leaflets.
  • Orange - orange and scarlet
  • Red
  • Height - 10m (33ft)
  • Climber - Some of these climbing plants will need trellis or wire supports if grown on walls or fences. Other grow aerial roots and are self-clinging - vigorous. Produces terminal bunches of 4-12 slender flowers
  • Hardy - average winter - Hardy through most of the UK apart from inland valleys, at altitude and central/northerly locations. May suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in harsh winters in cold gardens. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F)
  • Against a wall - in colder areas grow against a warm wall in full sun.

  • Partial shade - can tolerate some shade in warmer areas.
  • Additional Features - Good to know - - syn. Bignonia radicans. Train and tie in shoots until aerial roots have taken hold. Wildlife plant - nectar and pollen for insects.
  • Pests & Diseases - scale insects, mealy bugs, whiteflies, powdery mildew, leaf spot.
  • Place of origin - southeastern USA.
  • Resistant to honey fungus - These plants have little or few problems with honey fungus.
  • Flower Shape - Tubular - - tubular-trumpet-shaped flowers 6-8cm (2½-3in)
  • Hardiness - Frost hardy (down to -5) -
  • Pruning group - Pruning group 8
    Suitable for: Wall trained shrubs and less vigorous climbers.
    Action: For climbers 'spur prune' by cutting back 3-4 buds of the permanent framework. For wall trained shrubs cut back flowered shoots to within 2-4 buds of permanent framework.
    When: Annually after flowers if on previous year's growth, or in late Winter or Spring if on current year's growth.
