THYMUS
Commonly known as Thyme
Genus of about 350 species of woody-based, aromatic, evergreen perennials, shrubs and subshrubs found mainly on calcareous soils and in dry grassland throughout Eurasia.
Well-known culinary herb.
UK natives are Common wild thyme, T. praecox. more plentiful in the north and west and much milder than garden varieties, Large thyme, T. pulegioides, common only in south and east England, much larger and very aromatic and Wild thyme, T. serpyllum, smaller than Common thyme and found only in the Breckland of East Anglia.
