We recommend the use of Hydrangea blueing agent for all blue varieties. Due to the difficulties of growing blue Hydrangeas in pots, the first flush of flowers may flower pink. Please see below our article on Hydrangea care for full information.

  • Deciduous - narrowly oval, pointed, mid-green leaves to 15cm (6in) long.
  • Blue - sea blue on acidic soils
  • Red - reddish-purple on clay
  • Height - 1.2m (4ft)
  • Spread - 1.2m (4ft)
  • Medium shrub - Typically grow to around 4-6 feet in height - compact. Flattened flowerheads 5-10cm (2-4in) across. Leaves turn red in autumn.
  • Hardy - average winter - Hardy through most of the UK apart from inland valleys, at altitude and central/northerly locations. May suffer foliage damage and stem dieback in harsh winters in cold gardens. Plant can withstand temperatures down to -10°C (14°F)
  • Full sun - shelter from cold winds
  • Partial shade
  • Harmful if eaten - These will give you an upset tummy, so please don't eat any of these.
  • May cause skin allergy or irritant - Having skin or eye contact with these plants could result in an allergic reaction, burning or rash.
  • Additional Features - Good to know - - syn. 'Acuminata'. Blooms over a very long period.
  • Pests & Diseases - red spider mites, scale insects, vine weevils, capsid bugs, grey mould(Botrytis), hydrangea virus, powdery mildew, leaf spot, honey fungus.

    Suitable for: Deciduous shrubs that flower in the Summer or Autumn on previous year's growth, or deciduous shrubs that flower in late Winter-Spring on previous year's growth.
    Pruning: Trim off old flowers to the first bud beneath flower head. Cut back 1/3 of the oldest stems to promote replacement growth.
