    ILLICIUM

    Commonly known as Anise

    Genus of about 40 species of aromatic, evergreen shrubs and trees from woodland in southeastern Asia, southeastern USA and the West Indies.

    They are grown ornamentally for their unusual flowers and woody fruits.

      Grown for their thick, glossy leaves, unusual, many-tepalled flowers and woody, star-shaped fruits. I. anisatum (Japanese anise) is highly TOXIC and should not be ingested. The star anise of Chinese 5-spice is I. verum (Chinese anise).
